Images of Plymouth : Stonehouse by Derek Tait

Many photos and illustrations.

From the back cover:

The area covered by Stonehouse today was once the home to prehistoric rhinoceroses, horses, oxen and deer. In later times, it is thought that a Roman settlement once stood there.

This book covers its history from prehistoric times right up until today covering many events over the years including Houdini's jump from Stonehouse Bridge, the introduction of trams, the was years, the military presence and much more. Also mentioned are the many famous people who had a connection with the area including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Darwin and Vice admiral Hardy.

Many old photos show what the area was like in the early 1900s. Many old buildings have disappeared over the years either due to bomb damage during the Second World war or modern development. There are also many photos of transport including both horse-drawn and electric trams.

I hope this book will prove very enjoyable to people who have an interest in the history of Stonehouse and its surrounding areas.
